Flue Gas Ducts

When designing industrial infrastructure, flue gas exhaust systems play a crucial role in safely removing the by-products of combustion processes involving solid, liquid, or gaseous fuels.

Flue gases typically contain water vapour, carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides and sulphur dioxide. Depending on the fuel source and industrial process, they may also contain highly corrosive and toxic compounds that require safe handling and durable exhaust systems.

The primary function of flue gas ducts is to safely transport combustion gases away from production areas, protecting both personnel and surrounding infrastructure. Combustion by-products can be harmful not only to people but also to conventional construction materials.

Traditional masonry or steel flue systems are often vulnerable to chemical attack and corrosion, leading to increased maintenance costs and reduced service life. GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) flue gas ducts provide a superior alternative thanks to their exceptional corrosion resistance, high mechanical strength, and long-term durability, even in the most demanding industrial environments.

Where Are GRP Flue Gas Ducts Used?

GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) flue gas ducts are used wherever there is a need for exhaust systems that offer outstanding resistance to corrosive chemicals, elevated temperatures, and harsh industrial environments, while remaining lightweight, durable, and easy to maintain.

They are an ideal solution for:

  • Waste-to-energy plants and waste incineration facilities,
  • Paint and coatings manufacturing plants,
  • Plastic manufacturing facilities
  • Crematoriums
  • Wastewater treatment plants
  • Straw-fired heating plants and biomass power stations
  • Automotive manufacturing facilities

GRP flue gas ducts can be integrated into virtually any conventional industrial chimney system. They are the preferred choice not only for new industrial installations but also for refurbishment and modernization projects where only the chimney liner or flue system needs to be replaced without redesigning the entire structure.

At Trokotex, every GRP flue gas duct is custom-engineered and manufactured to meet the specific technical requirements of each project. This ensures a reliable exhaust system with optimal performacje, durability and long service life.

Choose a material that outperforms ceramic, glass and stainless steel while offering a more cost-effective solution. Choose advanced GRP composite technology.

Flue Gas Duct Specifications

As a general rule, every combustion appliance should be connected to its own dedicated flue gas duct. Connecting multiple boilers to a single flue system is only permissible when specific technical requirements are met, such as the installation of a draft diverter or a chimney draft monitoring system capable of simultaneously shutting down all connected boilers in the event of draft failure.

When several combustion units share a common flue gas duct, the duct must be designed with an adequate cross-sectional area to ensure efficient and safe removal of combustion gases under all operating conditions.

When designing an industrial chimney system, it is also essential to comply with applicable regulations governing chimney height above the roof ridge. Consequently, the height of the flue gas duct must be determined in accordance with local standards and the technical requirements of the installation.

The design of a flue gas system must take into account the type of fuel used, operating pressure, temperature and the chemical composition of the flue gases. Traditional materials such as steel or concrete often struggle to provide long-term durability in aggressive operating environments. GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) offers a superior solution thanks to its exceptional resistance to high temperatures and corrosive chemicals.

One of the greatest threats to the integrity of an industrial chimney is the formation of condensate, a corrosive mixture created when combustion by-products combine with water vapour inside the flue system. GRP is highly resistant to this type of chemical exposure, ensuring long service life and reliable performance.

A properly designed and manufactured flue gas exhaust system is essential for the safe, efficient, and economical operation of industrial heating and combustion installations. Design or material selection errors can lead to costly failures, increased maintenance requirements, and unplanned downtime.
